How to Write Cover Letter

Cover letter is an important part of the application process for any job. Most hiring managers automatically reject résumés without a cover letter. However, many job applicants do not know how to write cover letter. One must not forget that a cover letter is as important as the resume itself.

Your cover letter allows you to communicate with the recruiter by expanding on your professional expertise or presenting your self as a candidate for the specified job. The cover letter for job application is also an excellent platform for you to discuss some of the projects that you have done or express your interest in the company or job you are applying for. An employer also wants to see whether the candidate knows how to write a cover letter. Here, we discuss a few guidelines for writing a cover letter.

Brevity’s the word. Keep your cover letter short, simple, and precise. Always remember your cover letter should speak of your area of specialization, your professional expertise, and not your family history.

Your cover letter should be able to speak for itself. It should not be a repetition of your resume. Make sure the cover letter that you are attaching with your resume should introduce you as a candidate to the employer, instead of just showing your degrees and years of experience. In other words, your cover letter can express your interest in the company and the job.

Be relevant. Write about source of information, your academic achievement and professional accomplishments, and why you are looking for this job (this is the most important part; make sure you write about the company and the job profile, and not the paycheck, though it is the first thing that comes on your mind).

Avoid generalization. This is a common mistake. Research well in advance about the company and the job, you are applying for, before you write a cover letter. Be careful about the specific job profile and responsibilities.

Proof read your cover letter. Remember to go through your cover letter as carefully, as you would through your resume. There should not be any grammatical or typo errors in the cover letter, which makes or mars your impression.
